BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team welcomes the Daemen Wildcats to Alumni Arena for an exhibition contest on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
While the Bulls return just five players overall, those players include three starters and 70% of the offensive production from a squad that earned a trip to the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game and a postseason WNIT appearance. Buffalo then added six transfers and three freshmen to its 14-player roster.
Fifth year guard Chellia Watson returns for her final season after putting together a prolific scoring season as a senior, as she led the MAC and ranked fifth in the nation in scoring at 23.0 points per game while adding 5.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest. She also led the league and ranked in the top 10 nationally in field goals made (297), field goals made per game (9.0) and total points (759).
Sophomore guard Kirsten Lewis-Williams looks to build off a phenomenal rookie season in which she earned MAC Freshman of the Year honors, averaging 11.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while also shooting 46% from the floor. Fellow sophomore Alexis Davis also returns after averaging 7.8 points per game while leading the team in rebounding.
Also returning for UB are senior guard Sitota Gines and sophomore guard Paula Lopez who look to take on more expanded roles for the Bulls this season.
For fifth year guard Lani Cornfield and senior forward Ariana Seawell this won't be their first time playing in Alumni Arena as both played against the Bulls last season, Cornfield for Southern Miss and Seawell for Maryland Eastern Shore.
Senior forward Jordyn Beaty and Terah Harness are also in their final year of eligibility. Beaty won a conference championship at Texas A&M Commerce while Harness played two seasons at Marshall after playing for Coach Burke at USC Upstate. Sophomore forward Jaylin Hartman (George Washington) and sophomore guard Makenna Shaffer (Florida SouthWestern State) also join the Bulls out of the transfer portal.
Also joining the Bulls and looking to make an impact as freshmen are Mallory Daly, Aniya Rowe and Caylen Spano.
Daemen is coming off their second trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in four seasons. The Wildcat women posted a 23-8 overall record en route to their second East Region title. Daemen went 13-3 in ECC play and earned their third consecutive ECC Tournament title and fifth straight ECC regular season championship. Despite graduating three of the winningest players in program history, the Wildcats do return a solid core of eight players, including 2024 Third Team All-ECC forward Claire Pickett and the top rebounder from a year ago in Cecilia Lapertosa. The Wildcats also added seven players in the off-season, five freshmen and two transfers.
