Rowe’s Career Day Not Enough as Bulls Fall to Kent State
1/24/2026 2:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo women's basketball redshirt freshman guard Aniya Rowe had a career day but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback as the Bulls fell to Kent State 84-74 at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Rowe led all scorers with a career-high 34 points, including a career-best 13 made field goals and seven made three-pointers, to go with six rebounds, five assists and four steals. The seven made triples rank sixth all-time in a single game in program history and the 13 made field goals are tied for 12th all-time. Freshman Ella Corry also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Kent State opened the game on a 6-0 run to force an early UB timeout. The visitors extended the run to 9-2 before the Bulls began to chip away as Rowe got to the rim for a layup, Diann Jackson went to work for a bucket on the block and then Rowe hit a deep three to pull UB within four, but the Golden Flashes would maintain a 20-13 lead at the end of the first.
Rowe drilled a step-back triple on UB's first possession of the second quarter and later, drove and kicked to Gabby McDuffie who beat the buzzer with a corner three. Rowe continued to heat up as she drained another deep three to pull UB within 10 at the media timeout. Buffalo continued to share the basketball as Rowe found Meg Lucas on the block for a layup and Lopez found Anaya Coleman for a three on the wing to cut the lead back to single digits, but the Golden Flashes answered with a 7-2 run to take a 45-31 lead at the half.
Rowe came out of the locker room in attack mode as she scored eight of UB's first 10 points of the third quarter, including an and-one bucket and a triple, to cut the lead to six at the 6:43 mark but Kent State responded with a pair of scores to go up 53-44 at the media timeout. Buffalo's offense hit a lull as they did not record a field goal for the rest of the quarter as the Golden Flashes maintained a 62-46 lead at the end of the third.
Kent State extended their lead to 18 to force a UB timeout early in the fourth quarter. Lucas and Rowe scored on back-to-back possessions out of the timeout, and later, Rowe drained her fifth three of the game and Bohanon got a jumper plus the foul, to cut the lead to 13 at the media timeout. Corry got into the paint for a pair of buckets and then UB turned defense into offense as Paula Lopez executed a steal and score and then McDuffie came away with a steal and found Corry for a fastbreak jumper to cut the lead to 11 with one minute remaining but that would be as close as they would get.
Buffalo did a better job of taking care of the basketball as they recorded 17 assists while committing just 14 turnovers while recording a season-high nine made three-point field goals. They also forced 17 turnovers, scoring 18 points off those miscues and added 40 points in the paint, but they allowed Kent State to shoot 53% from the floor and lost the battle on the glass.
Up next, Buffalo will close out the homestand against Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, January 28 at 6pm.
