BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell to Eastern Michigan 71-51 on Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.
Freshman guard Aniya Rowe led the Bulls in scoring for the 10th time this season with 13 points to go with six rebounds and five assists. Fellow freshman Diann Jackson also scored in double figures with 10 points while notching seven rebounds, Janyah Bohanon scored nine points, and Meg Lucas added eight points and seven rebounds.
Jackson got off to a hot start, scoring on UB's first two possessions of the game, before she found Lucas on the block for a layup, but the Eagles responded with a pair of fastbreak buckets to take a 10-8 lead at the first media timeout. UB hit a lull offensively and Eastern Michigan capitalized as they stretched their lead to 17-10 at the end of the first.
Bohanon blew by her defender for a layup and later, Rowe beat the buzzer with a deep triple before slicing to the basket for a layup to pull UB within five midway through the quarter. Later, Jackson knocked down a baseline jumper and then scored in the paint a couple minutes later before Ella Corry spun and got a midrange jumper to drop through contact to pull UB within seven at the half.
The Eagles opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 16 and force a UB timeout at the 6:59 mark. Corry got by her defender and then Jackson grabbed an offensive rebound and knocked down a midrange jumper to pull UB within 12 at the media timeout. Rowe drove and dished to Bohanon on the block for a layup to cut the lead to 10 but the Eagles rattled off a 6-1 run over the final two minutes to take a 51-36 lead at the end of the third.
After a slow start to the fourth quarter, Rowe got out for a fastbreak layup and Gabby McDuffie powered up for an offensive rebound and converted the putback to pull UB within 12 at the 4:35 mark but the Bulls would get no closer the rest of the way.
Buffalo struggled offensively on the night, shooting just 29% from the floor. Eastern Michigan held the advantage on the glass and in the paint while also adding 21 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will close out the month of January at Akron on Saturday, January 31. Tipoff from James A. Rhodes Arena is set for 12wapm.
