AMHERST, MA – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell to Massachusetts 73-55 in the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center.
The Bulls were led offensively by junior guard Paula Lopez who scored a game-high 21 points, including tying a career-high with four made three-pointers, to go with four rebounds and four steals. Freshman Ella Corry also scored in double figures with 10 points and fellow rookie Meg Lucas finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Graduate student forward Liza Field, playing in the final game of her career, scored a career-high nine points.
Massachusetts opened the game on an 8-0 run to force an early UB timeout. The Bulls settled down and scored on four straight possessions, capped by a pair of buckets from Lucas and Diann Jackson, to cut the lead to two and force a UMass timeout at the 5:46 mark. UMass went back up by seven, but the Bulls closed the half on an 8-0 run, capped by a pair of triples from Lopez and Field to take a one-point lead at the end of the first.
UMass opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run, before Lopez knocked down a triple on the wing, Gabby McDuffie powered up for an offensive rebound putback, and Rowe sliced to the rim for a layup to cut the lead to six at the media timeout. After the hosts extended their lead to double digits out of the break, Lopez knocked down her third triple of the half, but the Bulls were held scoreless for the final two minutes of the quarter as UMass led 39-26 at the half.
The hosts used a 7-2 run to go up by 18 early in the third quarter before the Bulls began to chip away as Lucas and Lopez converted at the free throw line and then Aniya Rowe hit Lopez for a fastbreak layup, but the hosts would maintain a 50-34 lead at the media timeout. Lopez continued to heat up from deep as she drained another three from the wing to pull UB back within 12, but the Minutewomen would lead 61-44 at the end of the third.
Both teams struggled offensively to start the fourth quarter as UMass maintained a 20-point lead at the final media timeout and the Bulls would get no closer the rest of the way.
