BUFFALO, NY – In a game that saw multiple lead changes and runs, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team fought from start to finish to defeat Toledo 69-66 on Senior Day at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulls were fittingly led by senior Gabby McDuffie who recorded a UB career-high 18 points, including a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Freshman Aniya Rowe also turned in a stellar performance, flirting with a triple double, recording 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Fellow rookie Meg Lucas also scored in double figures with 14 points.
The Rockets opened the game on a 7-2 run before Buffalo began to chip away as Ella Corry and Rowe got to the rim for layups before Diann Jackson and Lucas knocked down midrange jumpers to cut the lead to four at the end of the first.
The Bulls used a 6-0 run, jumpstarted by a corner triple from Corry, to tie the game at 18 at the second quarter media timeout. Rowe continued to attack as she knocked down a jumper before hitting Lucas for a bucket and then McDuffie went into attack mode, going on a 8-2 run by herself, to put UB up by eight and they would maintain a 32-28 lead at the half.
Junior Paula Lopez drained a three from the top of the key on UB's first possession of the third quarter and then Lucas drained a jumper in the paint to put UB up seven. The Rockets answered with a 5-0 run before Lucas got to the rim for a layup and McDuffie followed with an offensive rebound putback and UB held a 42-40 lead at the media timeout. Toledo retook the lead at the free throw line with just under four minutes to go in the quarter, but McDuffie got to the rim for a layup and Rowe scored on back-to-back possessions to put UB up by five and force a Toledo timeout at the 1:48 mark. Toledo then hit a three to make it a one-possession game, but Lopez came up with a steal and banked in a three from halfcourt to give the Bulls a 52-47 lead at the end of the third.
The teams traded baskets early in the fourth quarter before Amber Howard knocked down a free-throw line jumper and McDuffie went 4-for-4 from the line to put UB up 62-54 at the final media timeout. Rowe then got to the charity stripe on two straight possessions and converted on all four attempts, before finding Lucas on the block for a layup to put UB up seven with 2:18 remaining. Toledo came up with a steal and scored to cut the lead to one with 1:13 remaining, but Rowe knocked down another pair at the free throw line to secure the victory.
Buffalo finished 19-of-23 at the charity stripe and recorded 16 assists on 23 made field goals while also winning the battle of the glass, 38-33, including 14 second chance points, and adding 32 points in the paint.
Up next, Buffalo will hit the road for the final two games of the season, beginning on Wednesday, March 4 at Northern Illinois. Tipoff from the Convocation Center is set for 7pm (EST).
