Women’s Basketball Closes Out Season at UMass on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team closes out the regular season with a contest at Massachusetts on Saturday at 1pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Mike Antonellis (play-by-play) and Zach Lewis (color) announcing and can be heard on 1520 and the Varsity Network with Vinnie Christiano III on the call.
This is the eighth overall meeting Buffalo and UMass with the Bulls owning a slim 4-3 series advantage. The Bulls fell to the Minutewomen at Alumni Arena on January 17.
A last second shot at the buzzer rattled in and out as Buffalo dropped a heartbreaker, 56-53, at Northern Illinois on Wednesday night. The Bulls were led offensively by sophomore Amber Howard who recorded a career-high 11 points to go with seven rebounds. Graduate student guard Gabby McDuffie also scored in double figures for the second straight game with 10 points and Ella Corry added eight rebounds and six assists. It was a balanced offensive attack overall for UB as all eight players who saw the floor scored on the night.
Freshman Aniya Rowe leads the Bulls offensively, averaging 13.0 points per game. She has scored in double figures 17 times and leads UB in three-point field goal percentage (.319), assists (98) and minutes played (31.2) while also ranking seventh in the league in steals per contest (1.9). Lucas is second in the MAC and ranks 39th nationally in rebounding (9.6 rpg) while also averaging 9.9 points per contest. The Bulls are second the MAC and rank 44th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (14.2). UB has started four freshmen in 10 straight games and has started three rookies 16 times. They are one of two teams in the MAC to have a rookie leading them in minutes played.
Massachusetts is 22-6 overall and 14-3 in league play after defeating Akron 74-64 on Wednesday. The Minutewomen are balanced offensively with three players averaging in double figures led by sophomore Yahmani McKayle who is averaging 16.3 points and 5.1 assists per game. Graduate student forward Megan Olbrys is averaging 13.9 points per game while leading the team in rebounding (7.9) and senior Allie Palmieri is also averaging in double figures (12.8). McKayle ranks second in the MAC in three-point percentage (.364), third in scoring (16.3 ppg) and assists per game (5.1) and fourth in field goals made (171). Olbrys is third in the league in field goal percentage (.520) and fourth in free throw attempts (136) and Ayanna Franks is third in steals per game (2.6).
UMass leads the MAC and ranks 55th nationally in three-point field goal defense (.282) while also leading the league with the fewest turnovers per game (14.9). Additionally, they rank second in the MAC in scoring defense (60.3), field goal defense (.380) and are third in assists per game (16.3), field goal percentage (.430), blocks per game (3.5) and scoring margin (+8.8).
