BUFFALO, NY โ The Mid-American Conference announced their postseason awards on Tuesday, with University at Buffalo women's basketball guard Aniya Rowe earning a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
"Aniya is a special player with an unlimited future ahead of her," said head coach Kristen Sharkey. "She wasn't only a great player for us; she also had to find a way to lead a group of 14 strangers under a brand-new coaching staff as a freshman. That's not easy for anyone, let alone a freshman. She saw multiple different coverages and continued to rise and ask questions. She continued to fight and believe in our vision. Buffalo, we have a great one. Proud of you, A-Rowe!
Rowe made an immediate impact in the UB backcourt this season as she led the Bulls in scoring (12.6 ppg), three-point percentage (.312), assists (3.5) and steals (1.9) per game. She scored in double figures 17 times, including five 20-point performances and a career-high 34 points against Kent State, which was the second highest single-game total by a freshman in program history.
The Geneva, NY native elevated her game in MAC play, averaging 14.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game while knocking down 1.6 three-pointers per contest, all of which ranked in the top two amongst all rookies in league action.
With Rowe's recognition, the Bulls have now placed a rookie on the All-Freshman team in five of the last seven seasons.
