YPSILANTI, MI – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fought to the end but ultimately came up short in a 73-63 loss at Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
Three Bulls scored in double figures, led by Meg Lucas who recorded a career-high 22 points to go with 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Fellow freshman Aniya Rowe scored 11 and Gabby McDuffie added 10.
The Eagles made their first six shots of the game, but the Bulls had some answers of their own at the other end as Diann Jackson and Lucas scored in the paint and then Ella Corry knocked down a three from the top of the key to pull UB within four at the media timeout. Buffalo continued to attack as Rowe hit Lucas with a great pass for a layup on the block and then McDuffie went to work, converting on an and-one jumper in the paint before knocking down a pair of threes, to cut the EMU lead to six at the end of the first.
Eastern Michigan extended their lead to double digits early in the second quarter before Rowe sliced to the rim for a layup, Jackson knocked down a mid-range jumper and Anaya Coleman converted a second chance layup to cut the lead to single digits at the media timeout. Both teams then went on prolonged scoring droughts, and the Eagles maintained a 39-31 lead at the half.
Lucas gave the Bulls a spark as she scored on three straight possessions early in the third quarter and then later came up with a steal and scored in transition, but the Eagles continued to have an answer as they led 50-41 at the media timeout. EMU then rattled off a 6-0 run to force a UB timeout at the 2:36 mark and they would lead 61-45 at the end of the third.
Corry and Lucas knocked down a pair of jumpers in the paint early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulls then hit an offensive lull for three minutes and the Eagles extended their lead to 16 midway through the quarter. Buffalo began to chip away as Jackson powered up for a layup through contact, Paula Lopez came up with a steal and hit Rowe for a transition bucket and Lucas knocked down a pair at the charity stripe to cut the lead to 10 at the 4:27 mark, but that would be as close as they would get.
Buffalo dominated the glass, outrebounding Eastern Michigan 40-24, including 15 offensive rebounds which they turned into 12 second chance points but the Bulls committed 23 turnovers and the Eagles capitalized, scoring 25 points off those miscues while adding 16 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will return for the final two-game homestand of the season, beginning on Wednesday, February 25 when they host Western Michigan at 6pm.
