BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell to Louisiana Monroe 73-64 in the second game of the MAC-SBC Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
The Bulls had a trio of freshmen in double figures on the day, led by Meg Lucas who scored 17 points to go with eight rebounds. Aniya Rowe scored 15 points while adding seven rebounds, three assists and three steals and Diann Jackson scored in double figures for the second straight game with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Bulls got off to a good start as Lucas scored on UB's second possession of the game before Rowe came up with a steal and scored in transition and then drained a deep step-back triple to give the Bulls a 12-7 lead at the first media timeout. Jackson continued to stay aggressive as she knocked down a pair of midrange jumpers before Lucas came up with a steal and hit Paula Lopez for a fastbreak bucket to give the Bulls a 20-15 lead at the end of the first.
It was a defensive battle for the first few minutes of the second quarter with only offense coming at the free throw line as UB would lead 24-21 at the media timeout. ULM used a 6-0 run to take the lead, but the Bulls battled back as Jackson and Lucas knocked down midrange jumpers before Ella Corry hit Jackson with a high-low pass for a layup in the final seconds to give UB a 30-29 lead at the half.
Rowe hit Jackson with a no-look dime for a layup on UB's first possession of the third quarter and later, UB rattled off a 6-0 run, capped by a steal and score by Corry, to give the Bulls a 38-31 lead and force a ULM timeout at the 7:42 mark. After the Warhawks tied the game at 38, Rowe drained a deep three to stop the run before finding Lucas for a jumper in the paint. Later, Rowe sliced to the rim for a layup and Anaya Coleman blew by her defender and finished off glass for a bucket to put UB up by four, but the visitors closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 54-49 lead at the end of the third.
The Warhawks extended their lead to 10 early in the fourth quarter before Corry spun through the lane and knocked down a jumper through contact, but the visitors answered with a three to go up 62-53 at the 7:10 mark. Coleman continued to stay aggressive as she skied up for an offensive rebound putback and-one bucket and UB would later cut it to five with four minutes remaining, but that would be as close as they would get as the Bulls struggled at the free throw line down the stretch.
Buffalo won the battle on the glass, including 18 offensive boards which they turned into 19 second chance points, while also maintaining the advantage in the paint, scoring 44 points inside, but they turned the ball over 22 times and shot just 50% from the charity stripe.
Up next, Buffalo will travel to Bowling Green for a clash with the Falcons on Tuesday, February 10 at 7pm.
