BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team scored 41 second half points but the rally fell short in a 72-61 loss at Bowling Green on Wednesday night.
The Bulls, who started four freshmen for the sixth straight game, saw all four rookies score in double figures, led by Meg Lucas who recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Aniya Rowe scored in double figures for the sixth straight game with 13 points, including 10 in the second half, Ella Corry added 12 and Diann Jackson scored in double figures for the third straight game, narrowly missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. It is the first time four freshmen have scored in double figures in the program's Division I era.
Bowling Green opened the game on an 8-0 run before Lucas scored on two straight possessions and Corry got a turnaround jumper in the lane to drop to cut the lead to five, but the hosts answered with a triple to go up 16-8 at the media timeout. Paula Lopez beat the buzzer on a floater in the paint before Corry hit Lucas on a lob for a layup to pull UB within four at the three-minute mark, but they would trail 21-15 at the end of the first.
Trailing by 21 entering the third quarter, Jackson found Corry for a layup on UB's first possession before Lucas hit Jackson with a high-low pass for a bucket to force a quick Bowling Green timeout. Jackson continued to go to work as she cut baseline for a layup off a beautiful dish from Corry and then powered her way inside for a bucket to cut the lead to 18 at the media timeout. Buffalo continued to attack as Lucas skied up for an offensive rebound putback and Anaya Coleman sliced to the rim and finished off glass for an and-one bucket to cut the lead to 17, but they would trail 54-36 at the end of the third.
Rowe and Jackson gave the Bulls a spark to start the fourth quarter converting on back-to-back and one buckets, before Corry knocked down UB's first three of the game and then finished off glass for a layup to pull UB within 10, and then Rowe drained a step back triple to cut the lead to nine at the final media timeout. Rowe continued to attack as she got a layup plus the foul to pull UB within six, but they would get no closer as the hosts were able to seal the game at the charity stripe.
Buffalo dominated the paint, outscoring Bowling Green 46-18 inside, while also maintaining a narrow five-rebound edge on the glass but turnovers proved costly once again for UB as they committed 18 on the night which the Falcons turned into19 points while also adding 19 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will have a bye weekend before returning to action on Wednesday, February 18 as they host Ball State on Pride Night at 6pm.
