BUFFALO, NY – Fans got their first look at the 2024-25 University at Buffalo women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon, and they were treated to a show as the Bulls defeated Daemen University 82-38 in an exhibition contest at Alumni Arena.
Four Bulls scored in double figures, led by sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams who scored a game-high 19 points. Also in double figures were Chellia Watson who scored 16 points, Terah Harness recorded 15 points, including three makes from beyond the arc, and Ariana Seawell added 10 points and five rebounds.
Lewis-Williams gave the Bulls a spark as she opened the game on a 5-0 run of her own and UB would extend the run to 10-0 on a Watson three to take a double-digit lead at the first media timeout. Buffalo would continue to put on an offensive clinic as Alexis Davis skied up for an offensive rebound and converted the putback layup and then Lewis-Williams hit a cutting Harness who got the bucket plus the foul. The Bulls capped the quarter with a beautiful defense to offense transition bucket as Paula Lopez found Lewis-Williams who threw it up ahead to Mallory Daly for a fastbreak layup and the Bulls led 21-0 at the end of the first.
Seawell got going with an and-one bucket on UB's first possession of the second quarter. Later, Daly knocked down a triple from the top of the key and Seawell followed with a midrange jumper a couple minutes later to put UB up 35-10, before Watson hit a cutting Lopez for a transition layup to put Buffalo up 42-11 at the half.
The Bulls continued to heat up from deep to start the third as Lewis-Williams drove and kicked to Harness for a corner triple. Later, Watson blew by her defender for a layup plus the foul and then Lopez found Davis with a beautiful pass for an and-one bucket to put UB up 61-15. Watson then converted a midrange jumper in the paint to put UB up 66-24 at the end of the third.
Buffalo continued to ramp up the defense in the fourth quarter as Daly came up with a steal and hit Harness up ahead for a fastbreak layup plus the foul to put UB up by 30 and Harness continued to heat up as Lopez found her on the wing for her third triple of the game as the Bulls cruised to victory.
The Bulls hung their hat on the defensive end of the floor as they forced 24 turnovers, converting those miscues into 31 points. Buffalo also dominated the paint 44-18, while pulling down 48 rebounds, including 14 offensive boards which they turned into 16 second chance points. UB also got out in transition as they recorded 15 fastbreak points on the day.
