Bulls Host Troy in Regular Season Opener
11/1/2024 4:41:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team will open the 2024-25 season, the third in the Becky Burke era, on Monday night as they welcome Troy to Alumni Arena at 6pm in the first game of the MAC-SBC Challenge.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Matt Mattia (color) announcing and can be heard online through the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This marks the ninth-ever meeting between the Bulls and Trojans, with UB owning a 5-3 series advantage. Buffalo and Troy (previously Troy State) played eight times from 1993-97 as members of the Mid-Continent Conference.
The Bulls have had success in their regular season openers since joining Division I in 1991-92, going 22-10 in the first game of the season over that span.
Buffalo dominated from start to finish as they defeated Daemen University 82-38 in an exhibition contest at Alumni Arena on October 27. Four Bulls scored in double figures, led by sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams who scored a game-high 19 points. Also in double figures were Chellia Watson who scored 16 points, Terah Harness recorded 15 points, including three makes from beyond the arc, and Ariana Seawell who added 10 points and five rebounds. The Bulls hung their hat on the defensive end of the floor as they forced 24 turnovers, converting those miscues into 31 points. Buffalo also dominated the paint 44-18, while pulling down 48 rebounds, including 14 offensive boards which they turned into 16 second chance points. UB also got out in transition as they recorded 15 fastbreak points on the day.
While the Bulls return just five players overall, those players include three starters and 70% of the offensive production from a squad that earned a trip to the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game and a postseason WNIT appearance. Buffalo then added six transfers and three freshmen to its 14-player roster.
The Troy Trojans are coming off a historic 2023-24 season in which they finished 22-12 overall and 13-5 in SBC play, including the program's first-ever postseason victory and the deepest postseason run in program history, culminating in a WNIT Fab 4 appearance. The Tigers, who were picked second in the preseason coaches poll, return just three players, from a season ago but added nine transfers to the roster, which is made up entirely of upperclassmen. Senior guard Shaulana Wagner received preseason second team honors while junior forward Zay Dyer was selected to the third team.
Last season, the Trojans led the nation in rebounding (47.9) while also ranking in the top two in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.09), scoring (80.9), defensive (30.8) and offensive (17.1) rebounds, rebound margin (7.8) and assists (15.4).
Up next, Buffalo will remain home as they host Buffalo State on Friday, November 8 at 6pm in the first game of a doubleheader with the UB men.
