BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's basketball team welcomes the Daemen Wildcats to Alumni Arena for an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon at 12pm. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Kevin Sylvester (color) announcing and broadcast on ESPN 1520 and The Varsity Network where Jack Kreuzer will have the call.
It is the first game of a doubleheader with the UB men who will also take on Daemen at 2:30pm.
The Bulls return just one starter from last year's squad that earned the program's fourth NCAA Tournament berth in six years. UB added eight transfers and two true freshmen in a wild offseason that saw a head coaching change and a major roster shakeup.
There is a new queen on the thrown in Alumni Arena as Becky Burke was named the 13th head coach of the program on April 8, 2022. She comes to Buffalo after two seasons at USC Upstate where she was named Big South Coach of the Year. She brought in a coaching staff with a winning pedigree in assistants Candyce Wheeler, Wyatt Foust, and Asia Dozier.
Fifth year guard Jazmine Young will be the lone familiar face for Bulls fans, and she is looking to build off a great year in which she made a major impact in the UB backcourt, averaging 6.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 20.0 minutes per game.
The Bulls will have a veteran presence on the court this season as they have seven upperclassmen on the roster, including five players in their fifth year of eligibility. Two of those fifth year's, Re'Shawna Stone, and Zakiyah Winfield, are coming off decorated careers at the Division II level where they led Glenville State to a National Championship as seniors.
Buffalo also added a pair who played high school ball together in Latrice Perkins and Chellia Watson, both Winder, GA natives. Perkins comes to UB from the University of Charleston where she was a four-year contributor for the Cougars, averaging 11.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game as a senior. Watson followed Coach Burke to Buffalo after earning All-Big South First Team honors, averaging 15.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game as a sophomore.
UB also added a player who is no stranger to the area or the MAC, in fifth year forward Kiara Johnson. The Cardinal O'Hara graduate played her first two seasons at Eastern Michigan before transferring to Towson before the 2020-21 season.
The Bulls recruited a pair of sophomore transfers in Emerita Mashaire and Kayla Salmons. Mashaire comes to UB from Cincinnati where she played in 24 games as a rookie while Salmons transferred in from Idaho State where she appeared in 19 games. Redshirt sophomore Ronni Nwora also joins the Bulls after previous stops at Georgia Tech and Saint Louis.
Also joining the Bulls and looking to make an impact as freshmen are Caelan Ellis from Powder Springs, GA and Hattie Ogden from Magrath, Alberta.
Daemen finished the 2021-22 season with a 22-5 overall record and a 16-1 conference mark en route to an East Coast Conference Championship and an appearance in the East Region finals. The Wildcats were picked to finish second in the ECC preseason poll. Daemen returns eight players from its' championship team, including graduate student Mickayla Ivy who led the ECC in field goal percentage last season, and junior guard Kaytlyn Matz who finished second on the team in three-point field goals made with 42 on the year. The Wildcats have won three-straight ECC regular season titles and claimed the ECC Tournament championship in 2019 and 2021. They have played in the NCAA Division II East Region Championship game the last two seasons, and advanced to the Elite Eight in 2021. Daemen added four true freshmen and three transfers to the 2022-23 roster. Former UB great Summer Hemphill joined the Daemen staff in September after a decorated career with the Bulls in which she graduated as the program's all-time leading rebounder and became just the second player in program history to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
