BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team defeated the Daemen College Wildcats 61-51 in an exhibition contest at Alumni Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulls scored the first basket of the game, but it was Daemen who led 7-4 at the first media timeout. The UB offense came alive as Young comes up with steal and converts on fastbreak basket and later Caelan Ellis knocked down a three from the top of the key to spark a 7-0 run to tie the game at 11 at the end of the first.
After a sluggish start to the second quarter for both sides, Ellis found Winfield for an easy layup and later, Young got a bucket and the foul to spark a 9-2 run to give the Bulls a 20-13 lead at the media timeout. Freshman Hattie Ogden got in on the action, finding a cutting Winfield and later Winfield hit Mashaire with a great pass to extend the UB lead to 24-13 at the 2:29 mark. Daemen answered with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to three with just over a minute to play in the half, but Ellis knocked down a big triple to end the run and Buffalo maintained a 28-23 lead at the break.
Fifth year guard Re'Shawna Stone and Winfield scored back-to-back layups to start the third quarter and later Winfield got to the charity stripe and knocked down a pair of free throws to put UB up nine at 7:39 mark. Young continued to see floor well as she hit Mashaire for an easy layup and then Stone hit a curling Winfield for a quick bucket to give UB a 38-29 lead at the media timeout. The teams then went back and forth before Young took it strong to the rack to put UB up eight with just under two minutes to go. After two straight baskets by Daemen, Winfield knocked down a midrange jumper to give Bulls 46-40 lead at the end of the third.
Both offenses stalled to start the fourth quarter before Winfield hit Kiara Johnson down low and she powered up for two and then a few minutes later Stone found Young for a layup to give the Bulls a 50-41 lead at the 5:45 mark. Winfield continued to attack as she slashed to the basket and finished off glass coming out of the media timeout and later pulled up and buried a mid-range jumper to put UB up by 11 at the 2:34 mark. Buffalo locked down defensively the rest of the way and Mashaire provided the exclamation point, knocking down a corner three with just under a minute to play to seal the victory.
The Bulls turned defense into offense as they scored 26 points off Daemen turnovers and added 15 fastbreak points. Buffalo also held a 34-28 advantage in the paint and a 38-35 edge on the glass, including scoring 14 second chance points off 14 offensive boards.
Up next, Buffalo will open the regular season on Monday, November 7 at Canisius. Tipoff from the Koessler Center is set for 5pm.
