BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker as they fell 57-55 at Canisius in the regular season opener at the Koessler Center on Monday night.
Fifth year guard Zakiyah Winfield was a bright spot for the Bulls as she recorded a double-double with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Kiara Johnson scored the first basket of game and the UB defense held the Golden Griffins without a bucket for the opening three minutes, but Canisius broke through with a 5-0 run to take a 5-4 lead at the first media timeout. Caelan Ellis gave the Bulls a lift as she drained a corner triple and later Winfield slashed to the basket for a layup to give UB a three-point lead at the 1:43 mark, but Canisius answered with a 7-0 run to take a 14-10 lead at the end of the first.
Ellis continued to stay hot from deep as she hit a three from the top of the key to put the Bulls back on top and UB extended their lead as Emerita Mashaire got a bucket and the foul to give UB a 19-17 lead midway through the second quarter, but Canisius answered with a 7-0 run to go up 24-19 at the 2:23 mark. Winfield ended the UB scoring drought with a turnaround jumper in the paint to cut the lead to five and later, Re'Shawna Stone hit Latrice Perkins with a great pass for a fastbreak layup at the buzzer to pull Buffalo within two at the break. The Bulls held the Golden Griffins scoreless over the final 1:50 of the half.
Stone was aggressive out of the break as she got to the line with a sense of urgency knocking down four straight free throws to give the Bulls the lead early in the third quarter. Winfield and Perkins then got in on the action with back-to-back layups and later, Perkins hit Jazmine Young for a fastbreak layup to give the Bulls a 35-30 lead and force a Canisius timeout at the 6:19 mark. Young continued to attack, driving baseline, and finishing off glass for two as the Bulls led 37-30 at the media timeout. Winfield got a floater in the paint to drop and then hit Johnson who got the bucket and the foul to extend the UB run to 21-5 and put them up 41-34 at the 2:26 mark and Buffalo led 44-36 at the end of the third.
Canisius hit back-to-back threes to cut the UB lead to four early in the fourth quarter, but Perkins slashed to the basket for a tough layup through contact to limit the damage. Canisius continued to knock down shots, cutting the lead to two, but Mashaire answered with a big corner triple to give the Bulls a 51-46 lead at the final media timeout. It was a back-and-forth affair before Canisius used a 7-0 run to take a 55-53 lead with 2:39 to go. Winfield answered with a big bucket, stopping on a dime, and getting a runner to drop to pull UB within one with 1:10 remaining. Both teams then traded defensive stops and the Bulls got the ball under the basket with 3.2 seconds go and Winfield drew the shooting foul, but she missed both free throw attempts and that was the game.
