EASTON, MA. – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2022-23 season as they defeated the Stonehill Skyhawks 62-56 at Merkert Gymnasium on Monday night. It was the first win for head coach Becky Burke at Buffalo.
Three Bulls scored in double figures led by fifth year guard Jazmine Young who scored a career-high 16 points. Also scoring in double figures were Re'Shawna Stone who scored 14 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists and Zakiyah Winfield who recorded her second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
It was a slow start to the game as the Bulls did not record a field goal until the 6:20 mark when Hattie Ogden hit Kiara Johnson on the high low and then Ogden spotted up and hit a triple on UB's next possession to give the Bulls an 8-4 lead midway through the quarter. Buffalo continued to heat up from deep as Stone drove and kicked to Caelan Ellis for a corner triple and then Young sliced to the basket and finished off glass to give UB a 15-10 lead and force a Stonehill timeout at the 2:22 mark. Stone continued to attack as she blew by her defender for an easy layup to give the Bulls a 17-10 lead at the end of the first.
The Skyhawks opened the second quarter on a 6-1 run before Young hit a spot up corner three to put the Bulls back up by five at the 7:25 mark at they would maintain a 22-20 lead at the media timeout. It was a sluggish back-and forth effort for both teams to close the first half and the game was knotted at 25 at the break.
The Bulls scored on two of their first three possessions to open the third quarter as Stone sliced to the basket for two and later hit Johnson with a lob pass and she powered up for a layup to give the Bulls a 35-34 lead at the media timeout. Young continued to attack out of the timeout as she got the bucket and the foul to put UB up four and later, Winfield scored on an out-of-bounds play to extend the UB run to 6-0 and force a Skyhawks timeout at the 2:11 mark. Ellis gave the Bulls a lift as she drilled a step-back triple and then Stone sliced to the basket for two off glass to cap an 11-2 run and put the Bulls up 44-36 at the end of the third.
The Skyhawks opened the fourth quarter on a 7-1 run to cut the UB lead to two before Young came up with a steal and found Winfield for a fastbreak layup to put the Bulls up 47-43 at the 6:16 mark. The Skyhawks answered with a 7-0 run to take a three-point lead before Young and Winfield answered with six straight points of their own to put UB up 53-52 with 3:24 remaining. Winfield continued to attack as she got a turnaround jumper to drop to give UB a three-point lead and later, she drove and kicked to Ogden who drilled a three from the wing to give UB a 58-52 lead and that would be enough as the Bulls secured the game at the charity stripe.
Buffalo scored 32 points in the paint while also recording nine points off Stonehill turnovers and six fastbreak points.
"I can't say enough about how proud I am of this team," said Burke. "I saw a ton of growth both offensively and defensively tonight, especially when we faced some adversity. This is a big step in the right direction for us. We are a team that's a steady work in progress and they are getting better every day."
Up next, Buffalo returns to Alumni Arena to host Princeton on Saturday, November 19 at 12pm.
