Bulls Defeat Central Michigan on Senior Day

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer (10-3-1, 6-2 MAC) celebrated their senior class on a beautiful fall afternoon, defeating Central Michigan 1-0 at UB Stadium on Sunday.
Graduate student forward Jasmine Guerber scored the game-winner in the 43rd minute.
The Bulls were aggressive off the opening kick as Sarah Woods and Guerber had good looks on target, but Brylee Borgman made a pair of saves.
Buffalo was at it again midway through the half as Adriana Victoriano found Carolyn Hinkle who ripped a shot and a minute later, Woods slid a pass to Guerber who drilled a shot, but both were saved by Borgman.
Guerber continued to apply pressure with another shot attempt in the 37th minute that sailed just high over the crossbar, but then she finally broke free a few minutes later as Jayda Schoburgh found her in front of goal and she one-timed a shot into the back of the net to give UB a 1-0 lead at the half.
Central Michigan had a scoring chance in the 79th minute as Rachel Jackson took a corner kick and used the wind to curl a shot on goal, but Lexie Thompson made a leaping save to keep the hosts off the board.
Buffalo looked to add an insurance goal late in the game as Ellie Simmons, Ashley Reyes and Guerber all had a go with shots from the top of the box that sailed high and out of play, but the pressure was enough to secure the victory as the UB midfielders and backline held the Chippewas to just two second half shot attempts.
The Bulls dominated the stat sheet as they outshot the Chippewas 21-3, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made two saves on the afternoon while Borgman recorded seven stops for the visitors.
"This senior class has the chance to do something special, something that has never been done for our program and that is what makes them special," said head coach Shawn Burke. "This group rewrote the standard and has helped propel this program into an elite level."
Up next, Buffalo will head back on the road as they travel to Athens for a clash with the Ohio Bobcats on Thursday, October 16 at 4pm.
