AKRON, OHIO – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (4-5-6, 1-3-4) played to a scoreless draw at Akron on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulls were aggressive in the opening minutes of play as Ella McDonald took a pass and carried the ball the length of the field before ripping a shot in stride that sailed just left of target. Later, Mae Hunt took free kick and played a good ball that was punched away by Sara Bower to the feet of Laiken Kiser, but her rebound attempt was blocked by the Akron defense.
The hosts looked to counter in the 24th minute as Allie McMillen worked her way inside the box and drilled a shot, but Lexie Thompson dove to her left and made a great save.
Back came the Bulls, as Jayda Schoburgh took the ball up the left side and fired a shot across the box, but it rolled right of target. Ten minutes later off a UB throw in, Hunt took space and fired a shot from outside the box, but Bower was there for the save.
Akron came out strong out of the break, recording a trio of shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Buffalo then settled in and countered with a pair of shot attempts of their own as McDonald attacked from the left side and fired a shot that missed wide left and then a couple minutes later, Eva Poissant settled a ball in the middle of the box, but her shot attempt off her left foot sailed high and out of play.
UB had two great chances midway through the half as Schoburgh wove her way behind the Akron defense in the 63rd minute and fired a shot from point blank range, but it clanged off the crossbar and then a few minutes later Adriana Victoriano crossed a ball to Schoburgh headed down to the foot of Gabriella Capra who one-timed a shot right in front of goal, but it was right at Bower who made the save.
In the final five minutes of play, Buffalo had three scoring chances as Kiser and McDonald each recorded shot attempts but both sailed high and out of play and then in the final 30 seconds the Bulls were unable to convert on a three-on-two opportunity and the game ended in a draw.
The Bulls doubled up the Zips, outshooting them 19-8, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, while also maintaining a 1-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made three saves on the afternoon for her league-leading ninth shutout of the season while Bower made four stops for UMass.
Up next, Buffalo will return to the state of Ohio for a contest against the Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday, 24 at 1pm.
