BUFFALO, NY – In a pivotal late-season matchup between two of the top teams in the league, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (10-1-5, 5-1-3 MAC) dominated from start to finish in a 2-0 win over Ohio at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
Scoring chances were limited in the first half, but Buffalo looked to get things going in the 23rd minute as Jasmine Guerber broke free and fired a shot in stride that sailed high and out of play. Later, Laiken Kiser slid a ball through to Sarah Woods on the right side of the box, but she couldn't convert as Celeste Sloma made the save.
UB had one more look late in the half as Kaylin Ricci found space at the top middle of the box and drilled a shot on target, but Sloma was there for the save and the game remained scoreless at the half.
Buffalo came out aggressive to start the second half as Olivia Bizzoni slid a pass through to Guerber who drilled a shot, but Sloma made a fantastic leaping save to knock the ball out of play. A minute later, Maya Galko played a big ball up to Arianna Zumpano who then found Gueber and she ripped another shot but the attempt missed right.
The Bobcats took their first shot of the contest in the 67th minute and it was a dangerous one as Eve Berish delivered a strike at the top corner of the net, but Lexie Thompson made an all-world save to punch the ball up and over the crossbar.
The Bulls continued to attack and were finally rewarded in the 75th minute as Woods played the ball to the foot of Guerber in the box and she banged a shot into the back of the net to give UB a 1-0 lead.
UB wasn't done yet as, less than 10 minutes later, Frederique St.-Jean played a beautiful ball up field to Zumpano who used some fancy footwork and carried the ball across the box before firing a shot past a charging Sloma to put the Bulls up 2-0.
The Bobcats looked to answer less than a minute later as Jaimason Brooker broke free and ripped a shot on net, but Lexie Thompson leaped up to make another fantastic save to preserve the clean sheet.
The Bulls dominated the stat sheet as they outshot Ohio 13-3 on the night, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Thompson made three saves in her 10th shutout of the year while Sloma also made three stops for the Bobcats.
"Really proud of the group," said head coach Shawn Burke. "It was a total team effort. Every line, every phase of play was really dialed in tonight, which is good because I think we've had a rough couple weeks and I think we just got back to them focusing on what they do well as individuals and the team success will follow and I think we saw that tonight. What a team effort, what a team win."
Up next, Buffalo travels to Oxford, Ohio for a contest against the Miami (OH) RedHawks on Sunday at 1pm.
