Bulls Continue MAC Play with a Pair of Important Games

BUFFALO, NY – As the regular season winds down and the standings tighten, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (9-1-5, 4-1-3 MAC) continues Mid-American Conference play this week with a pair of big games. The Bulls host Ohio on Thursday night before traveling to Oxford for a clash with the Miami (OH) RedHawks on Sunday at 1pm.
It will be the 29th meeting between Buffalo and Ohio with the Bulls holding a narrow 14-13-1 series edge. The Bobcats defeated UB 1-0 at UB Stadium a year ago.
Sunday's game will be the 30th meeting between Buffalo and Miami (OH) with the RedHawks holding a 16-10-3 series advantage. UB defeated Miami 2-0 at UB Stadium a year ago.
Buffalo played to a 2-2 draw with Kent State at UB Stadium last week. Sarah Woods tied the game at one on a beautiful top corner goal in the 14th minute and sophomore Maya Galko delivered a strike of her own off a free kick in the 70th minute for the equalizer. Kent State outshot the Buffalo 16-9 on the day, including a narrow 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, while the Bulls had a 6-5 edge in corner kick opportunities. Sophomore Lexie Thompson made five saves on the night.
The Bulls are balanced offensively, with 22 goals scored off the feet of 12 different players, led by senior forward Jasmine Guerber who has four goals while six other Bulls have recorded a pair of goals. Thompson has led the Bulls between the pipes, compiling a 9-1-5 overall record and recording nine shutouts a .47 goals against average and a .883 save percentage. Thompson leads the MAC and ranks in the top 10 nationally in those three categories.
As a team, the Bulls are one of the best defensive teams in the MAC as they lead the league and rank in the top 15 nationally in goals against average (.47) save percentage (.889) and shutout percentage (.600). They also rank in the top four in the league in corner kicks per game (5.3), shots per game (14.1), shots on goal per game (6.4) and goal differential (15).
Ohio is 9-2-4 overall and 4-1-3 in league play after falling to Toledo 1-0 on Thursday. Senior forward Jaimason Brooker leads the Falcons offensively with five goals and six assists while nine other players have recorded 2+ goals. In net, Ohio is led by junior Celeste Sloma who has made 47 saves and owns a 0.855 save percentage and a 0.55 goals against average in15 starts. In league action, the Bobcats have been stellar on both sides of the ball as they rank in the top three in goals (10), points (27), shots (106) and goals against average (0.50).
Miami (OH) enters the week 6-4-5 overall and 2-3-3 in league action after defeating Ball State 3-2 on Sunday. Fifth year forward Taylor Hamlett leads the RedHawks offensively with nine goals and three assists while senior midfielder Makenna Morrison has added four goals. Between the pipes, Miami is led by sophomore Dominique Popa who is 5-3-5 overall with 52 saves, a .765 save percentage and a 1.23 goals against average.
Up next, the Bulls will close out the regular season at Central Michigan on Thursday, October 31 at Central Michigan.
