STATE COLLEGE, PA – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team lost at Big Ten foe Penn State on Saturday afternoon, 6-1.
The Nittany Lions got off to a quick start winning all three matches in doubles, but the duo of Simon Wibler and Hao Sheng Koay gave it all they had at first doubles, losing 7-5 to the #29 team in the country.
In singles action, Penn State won matches at one, three, and four to clinch the contest. The Bulls got on the board at second singles as Koay won in straight sets, defeating Charl Morgan, 6-2, 6-4.
Both the matches at five and sixth singles went into a tiebreaker as Wibler won his first set at five, 7-5, before falling 6-2 in the second. In the sixth singles match, freshman D Giritharan dropped his first set 6-2, but he came back to take the second 6-2. Both players however would lose their third set tiebreaker.
""Today's match wasn't what we had hoped," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Penn State had more poise than we did and truly deserved to win that match. I am hoping we take the mental side of this sport more seriously going forward or it's going to be a tough road ahead."
The Bulls return to action on Feb. 22 when they travel down to Tallahassee, FL for a pair of matches beginning on Saturday morning against Florida State.
