TOLEDO, Ohio – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team (14-6, 8-2 MAC) closed the regular season in dramatic fashion, defeating Toledo 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bulls clinched a share of the Mid-American Conference regular season championship for the second straight year and the number one seed in next week's MAC Championship.
Trailing 1-0 after doubles action, the Bulls mounted a comeback as Faiz Nasyam cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at six singles before Minjae Kim overcame a dropped first set to win 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 at fourth singles and Emiliano Jorquera rallied to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at fifth singles to put UB up 3-1, before graduate student Clement Mainguy clinched the match for UB with a three-set thriller, winning 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at third singles. Junior Onder Balci rounded out the scoring for UB with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win at the second position.
"This is quite an accomplishment for our team," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We have played the whole season with a target on our back. We have handled the challenges like champions and Coach Tony and I are incredibly proud. We now set our sites on the MAC Championship next weekend. It is a brand new season and we will be ready."
Up next, Buffalo will serve as the host for the MAC Men's Tennis Championship. The Bulls will be the top seed and face either Ball State or Northern Illinois in the first semifinal match at 10am on Saturday, April 18. Matches will be played at the UB Tennis Courts (outdoor) or at Miller Tennis Center (indoor). For more information visit the Tournament Central website.
