BUFFALO, NY – After two straight road matches to begin the season, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team felt good to be home as they defeated Houston Baptist 3-0 to pick up their first win of 2019 on Friday night at UB Stadium. With the win the Bulls improve to 1-2 on the season while the Huskies fall to 1-3.
"It was a fantastic team performance," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We were able to play a lot of players tonight and did well dictating the game for 90 minutes. It was great to finally see the ball hit the back of the net and from multiple scorers."
The Bulls controlled the possession early and often taking the first six shots of the game before Katherine Camper converted in the 32nd minute off the feed from Adrianna VanCuyck and Leah Wengender to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Buffalo defense would hold tough as they did not allow a shot the remainder of the first half while the Bulls controlled the possession for two thirds of the opening 45 minutes of play.
The Bulls picked right up where they left off to start the secondhalf as Wengender found Hannah Callaghan who fed the ball through to Carley Zoccali and she ripped one into the bottom corner of the net to put UB up 2-0.
Less than ten minutes minute later VanCuyck received a pass from Marcy Barberic and drilled one past the keeper from just beyond the 18 to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead and that would be all they would need to secure the victory as the Bulls defense would not surrender a shot all game.
Emily Kelly recorded first win of the year and Sarah Bykowicz made an appearance between the pipes to close out the game. VanCuyck led the way for Buffalo with a goal and an assist, while Camper and Zoccali added a goal and three other Bulls recorded an assist on the night. Camper was also named Player of the Match by the UB coaches. Candice Kasahara and Sydney Gilmore both made their first collegiate appearances in the victory.
The Bulls dominated in several statistical categories as they out-shot the Huskies 16-0, including a seven shots on goal, and took the advantage in corner kicks 7-1, while maintaining over 60% of the possessions.
The Bulls return to UB Stadium on Sunday for a Noon tilt against Albany.
