BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team played to a hard fought 2-2 double overtime draw with Albany at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the draw, Buffalo moved to 1-2-1 on the year, while Albany is now 1-3-1.
The Bulls would strike first as Albany was called for a hand ball in the box in the 6th minute and Marcy Barberic converted the penalty kick to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Offense would be at a premium the remainder of the first half as the Bulls defense allowed just three shots to UB's six to maintain the one goal lead at the break.
Albany evened the score in the 51st minute as Jada Colbert flicked a ball on net past Emily Kelly to tie the game 1-1.
The score stayed that way until the 74th minute when Kaitlyn Walsh fed the ball through Gianna Yurchak who found Hannah Callaghan in the open space and she ripped a ball off the crossbar, bar down and into the top left corner from 25 yards out for her first career goal to put UB ahead 2-1.
The lead would be short-lived however, as Christina Cernuto played the ball to Jasmine Colbert who fired one past a diving Kelly from point blank range in the 80th minute to even the score at two and send the game to overtime.
Buffalo had a great look in the first overtime as Gurjeena Jandu ripped one off the cross bar in the 95th minute but that would be as close as UB would get as the two teams settled for a draw.
"Today was tough, especially going to overtime with us having just played Friday night and Albany having a whole week off," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We gave ourselves a chance today and battled until the end. We have a lot to build off of moving forward."
In net, Kelly made three saves for UB, while Sophia Chen had six stops for the Great Danes. For her efforts, Callaghan was named Player of the Match by the UB coaches.
The Bulls return to action on Thursday, September 12, as they travel to Saint Francis (PA) to take on the Red Flash at 3pm.
