BUFFALO, NY β The University at Buffalo women's soccer team left Saint Francis seeing red as they scored three goals in a three minute span in the first half which proved to be the difference as the Bulls defeated the Red Flash 4-1 at Stokes Soccerplex on Thursday afternoon.
The Bulls got on the board first as Katherine Camper was taken down in the box in the 29th minute, resulting in a Bulls penalty kick. Gurjeena Jandu stepped up and drilled the PK in the bottom corner, past a diving Julia Hernan, in the 31st minute to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo added to their lead in the 34th minute when Kara Daly played a ball across to Kaitlyn Walsh who blasted the one-timer into the top left corner for her first goal of the season to put UB up 2-0.
The barrage continued as less than a minute later, Annie Judasz played a perfect ball across the top of the box to the foot of Tatyjana Scalisi who blasted it home for her first career goal to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead.
The Red Flash got on the board in the 40th minute as Alyssa McGhee took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Bulls and found of back of the net to cut the lead to 3-1 at the half.
The Buffalo offense picked up right where they left off to start the second half as Leah Wengender played a ball into the mix off of a UB corner in the 50th minute and Kara Daly was there to finish it off for her first goal of the season to put UB up 4-1.
Saint Francis threatened in the 58th minute as Emily Kelly tried to stop a Red Flash offensive attack but was called for a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick, but Kelly redeemed herself as she came up with a huge stop, knocking away the PK attempt by Emilee Barnett to preserve the three goal lead.
It was a balanced and efficient effort offensively as UB took 12 shots off the feet of 11 different Bulls with seven of shots on goal. In net, Kelly made three saves for UB on six attempts, while Hernan had one stop and Shaelyn Parry had two saves off the bench for the Red Flash. For her efforts, Kelly was named Player of the Match by the UB coaches.
"It's always nice to see for goals on the day," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We were a bit sloppy and should have been more comfortable in a 4-1 win. Saint Francis never let up and caused us a lot of problems in the back that we have to address, but a win on the road is never easy."
The Bulls return to UB Stadium on Sunday for a 12 pm match with local rival Niagara.
