OLEAN, NY - The University at Buffalo soccer team fell to St. Bonaventure 1-0 at the Marra Athletics Complex on Friday night. With the win, Buffalo fell to 0-2 on the season, while St. Bonaventure improved to 2-1.
The Bonnies managed just one shot in the second half but that would be all they would need as Kenzie Tarmino found Maddie Mason who headed it in off the set piece in the 76th minute for the game-winning goal.
The Bulls outshot St. Bonaventure 18-3 on the night, but none would crack the scoreboard, as Bonnies' keeper Lauren Malcolm finished the game with six saves.
In the first half, the Bulls had their first scoring chance on a shot by Taylor Caridi from the top left corner of the box but Malcolm made the save. Later, in the 40th minute, the Bulls caught the Bonnies sleeping and Adrianna VanCuyck fired one on net but it sailed just wide.
Buffalo continued to apply the pressure in the second half as Gurjeena Jandu weaved through the Bonnies' defense and ripped a bullet on net but right at Malcolm. Later, Katherine Camper got free and let one go from the top of the box but Malcolm got her hands on it yet again. The Bulls would have one last scoring chance in the 88th minute as Kara Daly fired one on net from just outside of the box but Malcolm made one last save to secure the Bonnies' victory.
"We were punished tonight for not being ready for 90 minutes," said head coach Shawn Burke. "A very lackluster first half was the difference. It doesn't matter how dominant we were in the second half, a lapse in discipline was all it took to ruin our best 45 minutes of soccer."
The Bulls will return home to UB Stadium to host Houston Baptist in their home opener on Friday, September 6, at 7 pm.
