BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime to Ball State, 3-2, at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was Buffalo's second overtime game of the season as the Bulls fall to 4-6-1 on the year, 1-3 in the MAC, while Ball State improves to 9-3 overall, 3-1 in league play.
Ball State struck first in the 18th minute as Sam Kambol won the loose ball in traffic and knocked it past Emily Kelly to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals would add to that lead 20 minutes later as Nicky Potts played a ball through to Sam Musick in the box who then found Lizzie Philiban who flicked it past a Bulls defender and into the net to put Ball State up 2-0.
Buffalo would get a spark right out of halftime as Leah Wengender took the corner kick in the 47th and bent a beautiful ball inside the far post to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Bulls continued to stay aggressive and it paid off in the 68th minute as Adrianna VanCuyck played a ball to the edge of the box that found its way to Kaitlyn Walsh who slotted it past the keeper to tie the game 2-2.
Buffalo had a great chance to win it in the 86th minute as Gurjeena Jandu ripped a perfect ball off the top cross bar and the side post but it just stayed out and the game would go to overtime.
Ball State would win it in double overtime as Kambol crossed it from the right sideline into the box right to the foot of Julia Elvbo who one-timed it into the bottom left corner to give Ball State the 3-2 victory.
The Bulls outshot the Cardinals 15-12 on the day, including 10-4 in the second half, while also holding the 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior Kara Daly was named Player of the Match by the UB coaches.
"You can't spot a good team like Ball State two goals in the first half," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Give a lot of credit to our players for the way they responded in the second half and in overtime to get back in it. We are learning a lot of hard lessons right now and we just have to find a way to win."
The Bulls will be back in action on Thursday, October 10, when welcome Kent State to UB Stadium for a 7pm match.
