BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team defeated Kent State 3-2 in thrilling fashion at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
With the win Buffalo improves to 5-6-1 overall, 2-3 in the MAC, while Kent State falls to 4-6-2, 2-2-1 in league play.
The Bulls flashed up the field and struck gold early in the third minute as Marcy Barberic got the ball on a breakaway and fired a strike past the diving Faith O'Nell into the bottom right corner to give UB the early 1-0 lead.
Buffalo would have another great look in the 27th minute as Carley Zoccali ripped a shot off the crossbar that just missed the inside post.
The Bulls continued to stay aggressive in the second half and had their chances to add to the lead as Taylor Caridi had two great looks from inside the box but O'Neill and the Golden Flashes defense turned both shots away.
Kent State would tie the game in the 68th minute as Vital Kats chipped it to Cameron Shedenhelm who gathered the ball and flicked it over the head of Emily Kelly to tie the game 1-1.
The Bulls would retake the lead a little over ten minutes later as Marcy Barberic was taken down in the box and then converted the penalty kick to put UB up 2-1.
Kent State wouldn't go down without a fight as Kats took the free kick and played a great ball into the box and right to the feet of Shedenhelm who found the bottom of the net to even the game at two.
The Bulls responded immediately as Tess Ford banged home the game-winner in the 86th minute off the feed from Gurjeena Jandu and Taylor Caridi.
In net, Kelly recorded nine saves on the night while O'Neill made six stops for Kent State. After leading UB with two goals on four shots, Barberic was named Player of the Match by the UB coaches.
"I'm really happy for the group," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We've had a tough stretch with results not going our way and to concede the lead twice but to come right back down and find the winning goal says a lot about our character and the athletes we have in our locker room. This group wanted to win, they found a way and they deserve all the credit."
The Bulls travel to Athens, Ohio on Sunday, October 13, for a 1pm match against the Bobcats.
