BUFFALO, NY – After a pair of tough home losses, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team concludes its homestand as the Bulls host Kent State at UB Stadium on Thursday night, before hitting the road for a conference match at Ohio on Sunday.
Thursday is also Alzheimer's Awareness night at UB Stadium. Bulls' players will be wearing purple t-shirts during warmups and fans are encouraged to wear purple as well to help raise awareness to end Alzheimer's.
On Thursday it will be the 23rd all-time meeting between Buffalo and Kent State with the Golden Flashes holding the 12-9-1 series edge. Kent State has won three straight matches against UB, most recently a 5-2 victory in Kent last season.
On Sunday, Buffalo and Ohio will also meet for the 23rd time. Ohio holds a narrow 11-10-1 edge in the series. The Bulls have won two of the last three meetings and look to avenge last season's 2-1 loss at UB Stadium.
Buffalo (4-6-1, 1-3-0 MAC) will look to bounce back from a pair of home losses to Miami (OH) and Ball State last week. The Bulls had the advantage in shots, corner kicks and time of possession while limiting the RedHawks to just two shots on goal but unfortunately for the Bulls, one of those two shots proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Miami win on Friday night. On Sunday the Bulls lost a heartbreaker in double overtime to Ball State, 3-2. After digging themselves in a 2-0 first half hole, the Bulls responded in the second half with goals from Leah Wengender and Kaitlyn Walsh to force extra time where the Cardinals netted the game-winner in the 109th minute. Walsh and Wengender led UB on the weekend with a goal apiece while Adrianna VanCuyck and Katherine Camper each added an assist.
Kent State enters Thursday's match with a 4-5-2 overall, 2-1-1 MAC record after defeating Toledo 3-0 on Sunday. The Golden Flashes are led offensively by Vital Kats and Karly Hellstrom who have each scored four goals and added a pair of assists, while Kats leads the team with 50 shots. Cameron Shedenhelm has also impressed, scoring three goals while recording a team-high five assists on the year.
In net, Kent State has relied on Faith O'Neill who has started all 11 games for the Golden Flashes, compiling a 4-5-2 overall record with a 1.22 goals against average and 41 saves on the year.
Ohio enters the weekend with a 7-5 overall, 2-2 MAC record after falling to Bowling Green 3-1 on Sunday. The Bobcats are led offensively by Alivia Milesky who leads the team with five goals to go along with three assists. Maddie Young and Abby Townsend have also impressed as Young has recorded four goals and four assists while Townsend has added three goals and a team-high seven assists on the season.
Junior Sydney Malham has led Ohio between the pipes, compiling a 5-5 overall record with a 1.74 goals against average and 39 saves in 11 appearances.
Following weekend play the Bulls will return to UB Stadium to wrap up the home portion of their schedule as they host Northern Illinois on October 18 before welcoming Western Michigan to UB Stadium on Senior Day on Sunday, October 20.
