PHOENIX, AZ – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-1) dropped its first contest of the season, falling to Grand Canyon 2-0 at the GCU Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.
Senior goalkeeper Lexie Thompson was a bright spot for the Bulls, recording a career-high 12 saves on the night, including several highlight-reel plays, as she continues to prove that she is one of the best goalkeepers in the nation.
Grand Canyon was aggressive from the opening kick as Sabrina Guzman ripped a shot in stride, but Thompson made a leaping save to knock the ball out of play. The Lopes would break through just a couple minutes later though off a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead.
The hosts would add to their lead in the 17th minute, capitalizing off a UB miscue as the Bulls were unable to clear a ball out of the box and Amanda Adams was there to intercept the pass and fire a shot on goal which Thompson saved but Ellie Johannes was there for the rebound to put the Lopes up 2-0.
Thompson did everything she could to limit the damage as the Lopes got another corner kick opportunity in the 33rd minute which the senior made a punch save and then got back up on her feet to make a sliding kick save on the rebound and the senior stood tall for another save in the final minutes of the half as the game remained a two-goal lead for the hosts at the break.
The Bulls looked to create early in the second half as Eva Blatz found space and fired a shot from the top of the box that missed wide of target.
GCU was on the attack a few minutes later as they played a corner kick into the box and drilled a shot from point blank range but Thompson was there for another sliding kick save to knock the ball away.
Buffalo had one final chance in the 78th minute as Maya Galko took a corner kick and curled a great ball on target that found the head of Talia Vitullo but she didn't quite get all of it.
Grand Canyon outshot the Bulls 26-7 on the night, including a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal, and an 8-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Emma Knack made two stops for the Lopes, while Thompson made a dozen stops for UB.
Up next, Buffalo will conclude the road trip at Arizona State on Sunday, August 23 at 1pm (EST).
