Women’s Basketball Opens Season With Friday Night Exhibition Against Mercyhurst

BUFFALO, NY - A new season begins as the defending MAC Champion Buffalo Bulls host Mercyhurst on Friday night in an exhibition at Alumni Arena. Tip off is set for 7pm and admission is free.
The Bulls return 11 scholarship players from last year's squad that won 24 games, claiming the MAC Tournament title for the second time and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, becoming the first MAC women's team to win an NCAA Tournament game in back-to-back years since Toledo in 1991 and 1992.
Returning from that squad is a core of four upperclassmen, led by senior forward Summer Hemphill and senior guard Theresa Onwuka. Also returning are junior guards Hanna Hall and Marissa Hamilton.
Rising sophomores Adebola Adeyeye, Keowa Walters and Aireal Dickson are expected to take on a much larger role this season, while fellow sophomores Oceane Kounkou and Zena Elias will also look to contribute for the UB this season.
Friday will also be the first time Bulls fans will get a look at a talented group of freshmen in Dyaisha Fair, Loren Christie, Elea Gaba and Jessika Schiffer.
Mercyhurst is coming off a 10-18 season and a 7-14 mark in PSAC play last year. The Lakers are led by senior guard Nicolete Newman who averaged 11.6 points and 3.6 rebounds a year ago.
