ITHACA, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (1-0-1) played to a 1-1 draw with Colgate at Beyer-Small '76 Field on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Jessie Bernabe recorded her first career goal off an assist from fellow rookie Gabriella Capra.
The Bulls got off to a good start with a pair of shots on goal from Sarah Woods and Jasmine Guerber in the opening 12 minutes of play. Woods had another good look in the 30th minute but Ella Poppinga made the save.
Bernabe gave UB great minutes off the bench, recording a pair of shots on target in the 37th and 42nd minutes. Buffalo continued to create chances and capitalized late in the final minutes of the first half as Capra forced a turnover and found Bernabe just inside the box and the third time was the charm as she drilled a shot into the left side of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead at the break.
Colgate got on the board in the 61st minute as they played a ball into the box and took advantage of a miscommunication and rare defensive miscue by the UB backline to tie the game at one.
Five minutes later, Buffalo looked to answer as Guerber and Eva Blatz fired shots but the Raiders defense was there to thwart the attack.
The Bulls had one of their best looks of the half in the 77th minute as Carolyn Hinkle went to work, fighting for possession with her defender, broke free and curled a shot on target but it sailed just high and out of play.
Buffalo had one more good luck in the final minutes as Ashley Reyes took a free kick and played a great ball on goal, but Poppinga leaped up and knocked the ball out of play and the game would end in a draw.
The Bulls outshot the Raiders 19-5, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal, while also maintaining an 11-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Lexie Thompson made three saves on the afternoon while Poppinga recorded six stops for the Raiders.
Up next, Buffalo will return home to host Colorado College in the home opener at UB Stadium on Thursday at 7pm.
