BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-0-1) defeated Colorado College 1-0 in the home opener on Thursday night at UB Stadium.
Freshman Adriana Victoriano scored the game-winner in the seventh minute for her first collegiate goal.
The Bulls were the aggressors early and often and they capitalized as Jasmine Guerber found Victoriano up the left side, and she cut back and drilled a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers then made a couple of runs of their own with two shots on goal, but Lexie Thompson was there to make a pair of saves.
Buffalo went back on the attack midway through the half as Sarah Woods made a good run up the right side and fired a shot that sailed just high and out of play. A battle for possession ensued over the closing minutes as the Bulls maintained a 1-0 lead at the break.
UB continued to attack early in the second half as Guerber had her shot blocked and Jessie Bernabe's rebound sailed high. Later, off a Tigers' turnover, Liv Johnsen drilled a shot in stride that sailed wide.
The Bulls continued to create chances in the 67th minute as Jayda Schoburgh played a ball across to Woods who ripped a shot off the top crossbar. Later, it was freshman Maddy Murphy getting into the action as she ripped one from deep and then later, she had another good look from point blank range, but Regan Wallace was there for a pair of great saves.
UB had a couple more chances in the final 10 minutes of play as Laiken Kiser took a shot in stride and then Guerber played a ball across to Carolyn Hinkle who put a ball on target, but Wallace was there once again to thwart the attack.
Buffalo held a 15-11 edge in total shots, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Thompson and Wallace made five saves each on the night.
Up next, Buffalo will travel to East Lansing for a contest at nationally-ranked Michigan State on Thursday, August 28 at 7pm.
"Fantastic crowd, we could feel the energy and it was great to be back home," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We really hammered the sixes and the transition, and I thought they had a great bounce back game. Collectively, our backline and our holders did a fantastic job start to finish and kept them out of dangerous areas. Ultimately at the end of the day I have to do a better job to get this team prepared for the little details because there is a lot that's slipping and we haven't been punished for it just yet, but that's my responsibility."
