BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's soccer team travels to East Lansing for a clash with No. 17 Michigan State on Thursday at 7pm.
It is the fourth overall meeting between the two programs with the Spartans winning each of the previous matchups, most recently a 2-0 win at DeMartin Stadium in the 2013 season opener.
The Bulls have scored a goal against three of the last four Power 4 opponents that they have faced, coming away with wins in two of those contests. The Bulls have defeated a Power 4 program in back-to-back seasons, most recently a 2-1 win over then #7 Pittsburgh last year.
Buffalo defeated Colorado College 1-0 in the home opener on Thursday night at UB Stadium. Freshman Adriana Victoriano scored the game-winner in the seventh minute for her first collegiate goal. Buffalo held a 15-11 edge in total shots, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Lexie Thompson made five saves on the night, recording her second shutout of the season, earning her Mid-American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
Michigan State is 2-0-2 after defeating Milwaukee 9-0 on Sunday. They were picked fourth in the Big Ten preseason poll after finishing the 2024 season with a 14-3-5 overall record and 7-1-3 mark in league play. They are coming off back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 and won B1G titles in both 2022 and 2023. They return 19 players, including a pair of Herman Trophy Watch List honorees in junior Bella Najera and senior Maggie Illig. Najera led the Spartans with eight goals and 19 points last season while Illig started all 20 games, serving as an anchor of the defense. Both were All-Big Ten selections a year ago. Noelle Henning and Kennedy Zorn have split time between the pipes, combining for a 0.25 goals against average and .917 save percentage across four contests.
Up next, Buffalo will return to Western New York to take on Big 4 foe Niagara on Wednesday, September 3 at 7pm.
