Bulls Open MAC Play this Weekend

BUFFALO, NY – After finishing non-conference play unbeaten for the first time since 1999, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (5-0-2) opens Mid-American Conference play with a pair of games this week. The Bulls travel to the state of Ohio for a clash with the Akron Zips on Thursday night before welcoming the Eastern Michigan Eagles to UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Thursday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ while Sunday's action will be broadcasted on YouTube with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
It will be the 25th meeting between Buffalo and Akron with the Bulls holding an 13-8-3 series advantage. UB defeated Akron 2-0 at FirstEnergy Stadium last season.
On Sunday it will be the 30th meeting between Buffalo and Eastern Michigan with the Eagles holding a narrow 11-10-8 series edge. The two teams played to a 3-3 draw at Scicluna Field a year ago.
The Bulls wrapped up non-conference action with a 2-0 win at Northern Colorado on Sunday. Sophomore Maya Galko played a great ball off a corner that the UNC goalkeeper was unable to handle for UB's first goal of the day, and then junior Ellie Simmons added to the lead with a penalty kick goal.
The Bulls are balanced offensively, with 11 goals scored off the feet of seven different players, led by senior forward Jasmine Guerber who has three goals and Simmons who has a pair of goals. Additionally, five other players have recorded a goal on the season. Sophomore Lexie Thompson has led the Bulls between the pipes, compiling a 5-0-2 overall record. She is tied for first in the MAC in shutouts (4) while ranking in the top three in goals against average (0.43), save percentage (.893) and total saves (25). As a team, the Bulls lead the league and rank in the top 30 nationally in goals against average (.429) save percentage (.900) and shutout percentage (.571).
Akron also enters Thursday's match with a 5-0-2 overall after defeating Saint Francis (PA) 1-0 on Sunday. The Zips, who return nine starters in 2024 in addition to 11 newcomers, were picked to finish 11th in the MAC preseason poll. The Zips are balanced offensively, led by Ella Hadley who has two goals while five other players have recorded a goal on the season. Redshirt junior Penelope Cuirinier, who is all over the Zips record book, has started all seven games between the pipes, making 20 saves and recording a .40 goals against average and a .909 save percentage
Eastern Michigan enters league play with a 4-3 overall record after dropping a road contest at Loyola Chicago last week. Sophomore forward Olivia Sipsock leads the Eagles offensively with three goals while two other players have recorded a pair of goals. In net, EMU is led by redshirt sophomore Ella Holland who has made 28 saves and owns a 0.800 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average in seven starts.
Following weekend play, the Bulls will continue league action on Thursday, September 26 as they travel to Kalamazoo for a clash with the Western Michigan Broncos at 4pm.
