AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (6-0-2) scored a pair of second half goals to lead the Bulls to a 2-0 win over Akron in the Mid-American Conference opener at FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday night.
Buffalo had their first scoring chance of the game in the fifth minute as Jasmine Guerber found space and drilled a ball off the crossbar. Five minutes later, Olivia Bizzoni made a great run up the left side and slid a ball through the box, but a Bull could not get on the other end as the ball was cleared out of play.
Later, in the 30th minute, the Bulls were firing on target again as Kelly Severini found Bizzoni at the top left corner of the box and she ripped a shot in stride that clanged off the crossbar once again and the game remained scoreless at the break.
Buffalo continued to attack out of the locker room as Guerber played a ball to the foot of Kaya Schultz who got a foot on it but not all of it as Sara Bower made the save. Later, Sarah Woods hit the crossbar and then Kaylin Ricci took a free kick from the top of the box but her shot sailed just wide of target.
The Bulls finally broke through in the 77th minute as Maya Galko took the corner and found the head of Frederique St.-Jean who flicked it into the back of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo continued to move the ball into their final third in the 85th minute, as Ellie Simmons played a ball up the right side to Woods who cut back towards the middle of the field and found Bizzoni who drilled a shot in stride into the bottom right corner of the net to put UB up 2-0 and that would be enough to secure the victory.
It is the fifth shutout of the year for the UB backline as they allowed just one shot on the night, while the offense recorded 18 shots, including six on goal. The Bulls also maintained a 9-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Freshman Carolyn Hinkle was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"Great way to start of MAC play with a convincing 2-0 win," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We know where we still need to improve and that will be our goal moving forward, but credit to the players for sticking to the plan today and finding a way to get a result."
