BUFFALO, NY – Sophomore midfielder Laiken Kiser scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute to lead the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (7-0-2, 2-0 MAC) to a 1-0 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium. It was the first career goal for Kiser.

Eastern Michigan controlled the pace early on before the Bulls going things going in the 14th minute as Kelly Severini fired a shot on target, but Ella Holland made the save.
In the 23rd minute, Olivia Bizzoni found Severini who slid a pass through to Jasmine Guerber and she fired a shot in stride that sailed wide right. Two minutes later, Arianna Zumpano broke free behind the EMU backline and ripped a shot that was saved by Holland. On the ensuing two corner kicks, Severini got her head on a ball and Maya Galko curled a shot on net, but Holland and the EMU defense came up with a pair of stops.
Buffalo had one last chance late in the half as Zumpano settled and fired on goal, but Holland knocked the ball out of play and the game remained scoreless at the break.
The Bulls continued to attack to start the second half as Guerber had her shot blocked, but Schultz was there for the rebound and hit Sarah Woods who fired a shot that was saved. Later in the 61st minute, Severini slid a ball through to Bizzoni who drilled a ball that clanged off the far post and rolled along the goal line, but then trickled out of play.
The Eagles found their final third in the 68th minute as they took a corner kick and Josie Langhans drilled a shot from inside the box, but Lexie Thompson made a great save from point blank range.
UB finally broke through in the 73rd minute as Carolyn Hinkle fed Kiser with a perfect ball and she delivered a strike into the top right corner to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Eastern Michigan would not go away as they had two good scoring chances in the final minutes, but Thompson came up with two fantastic saves to preserve the shutout.
Buffalo outshot Eastern Michigan 18-11 on the day, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-4 edge in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made four saves while Holland made nine stops for the Raiders. Kiser was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"I think we really stayed the course and stayed committed to the defensive game plan," said assistant coach Brianne Casey. "With the conditions and the heat, it had to be a team effort from multiple shifts and I'm proud of them for getting six points on the weekend. That's a great way to start conference play. We still have some things we can tidy up and we'll watch film, take care of our bodies and then look to get going on the road next week."
Up next, Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, September 26 at Western Michigan.
