Bulls Travel to Western Michigan, Host NIU This Week

BUFFALO, NY – After picking up two wins to open league play, Buffalo is back with a pair of games this week. The Bulls travel to Western Michigan for an afternoon matinee against the 2023 regular season MAC champion Broncos on Thursday before returning home to host Northern Illinois at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It will be the 32nd meeting between Buffalo and Western Michigan with the series history knotted at 12-12-7 series. The Broncos defeated the Bulls 4-1 in Kalamazoo a year ago.
On Sunday, Buffalo and Northern Illinois will meet for the 27th time with the Bulls owning a 13-9-4 series edge. The Bulls have won four of the past five meetings with the Huskies, most recently a 2-0 in DeKalb last season.
UB started league play with wins at Akron and against Eastern Michigan. On Thursday, graduate student defender Frederique St.-Jean scored the game-winner at Akron and Olivia Bizzoni added a goal as well and then on Sunday, Laiken Kiser scored the first goal of her UB career in the second half to lead the Bulls to a victory over the Eagles.
The Bulls are balanced offensively, with 14 goals scored off the feet of nine different players, led by senior forward Jasmine Guerber who has three goals and Olivia Bizzoni and Ellie Simmons who have two goals each. Sophomore Lexie Thompson has led the Bulls between the pipes, compiling a 7-0-2 on the season and has recording six shutouts a .33 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. Thompson leads the MAC and ranks in the top 10 nationally in those three categories.
As a team, the Bulls lead the league and rank in the top 20 nationally in goals against average (.333) save percentage (.912) and shutout percentage (.667). They also rank in the top three in the league in corner kicks per game (5.67), shots per game (14.56) and goal differential (11).
Western Michigan finished non-conference play with a 3-1-3 overall record and is 1-0-1 in league action after exploding for six goals in a win over Miami (OH). Graduate student forward Jen Blitchok leads the Eagles and the MAC offensively with offensively with 10 goals while Abby Werthman has recorded four goals and a team-best seven assists. WMU splits time in goal between Lauren Boafo who has 15 saves and a .789 save percentage in five starts and Ava Wilberding who has made 19 saves and owns a .864 save percentage in four starts. The Broncos are currently riding a 13- game unbeaten streak in regular season MAC play, including winning the 2023 MAC Regular Season Championship with an undefeated record.
Northern Illinois is 6-1-3 overall record and 0-0-2 in league play after playing to a scoreless draw at Ohio last weekend. Sophomore forward Tyra King leads the Huskies offensively with six goals and four assists while junior forward Kelsi McLaughlin has recorded four goals and three assists. In net, NIU is led by Ary Purifoy who has made 29 saves and owns a 0.806 save percentage and a .79 goals against average in nine starts.
Following weekend play, the Bulls will have a week off before resuming league action on Sunday, October 6 at Ball State.
