KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (7-1-2, 2-1-0 MAC) saw its nine-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 1-0 loss at Western Michigan on Thursday afternoon.
The Bulls were the aggressors early on as Olivia Bizzoni took a shot in the fifth minute that was deflected out of play, but the Bulls were unable to capitalize on the ensuing two corner kick opportunities.
The teams then traded possessions and shots over the middle part of the first half until the Broncos broke through in the 36th minute when Frederique St.-Jean and the UB back line cleared a shot attempt out of play, but the hosts scored on the following corner kick to take a 1-0 lead and that would be the score at the half.
Buffalo looked to claw back int the second half as Ellie Simmons took a deep free kick in the 64th minute and played a ball on target, but Lauren Boafo was there for the save.
The Bulls had one of their best scoring chances of the game in the 80th minute as Carolyn Hinkle slid a great ball through to Ashley Reyes who fired a shot in stride but it was saved by Boafo and then on the ensuing corner kick, Boafo punched the ball away once again and that would be it as the Bulls were unable to capitalize in the final minutes of play.
Western Michigan outshot the Buffalo 13-7 on the day, including a narrow 5-4 edge in shots on goal and a 6-4 edge in corner kick opportunities. Sophomore Lexie Thompson made three saves while Boafo made four stops for the Broncos. Senior midfielder Kaya Schultz was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"Today we learned that if we don't take care of the details and don't take care of the ball, we'll get punished," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Western is a top team for a reason and we saw firsthand the level of competitiveness and fight you need to win these games."
The Bulls return home to host Northern Illinois at UB Stadium on Sunday at 1pm.
