BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team defeated Big 4 foe St. Bonaventure 1-0 in front of a lively crowd on a beautiful night at UB Stadium on Thursday.
Fifth year midfielder Kelly Severini scored the game-winner in the 80th minute in her first game as a Bull.
The Bulls dominated possession from kickoff as Arianna Zumpano made a great run in the opening minutes but had her shot blocked. Later, Sarah Woods settled a ball at the top of the box and fired but Jael Schubert made a great save.
The Bulls then had three great looks off corner kick opportunities, first in the 23rd minute as Olivia Bizzoni played a ball to Zumpano who ripped a shot in stride, but Schubert made diving save. In the 28th minute, Ellie Simmons played a great ball into the head of Severini whose shot sailed just high and then two minutes later, Frederique St.-Jean drilled a shot on net, but it sailed off target.
Perhaps the best look of the half came in the 36th minute as Ashley Reyes found space and drilled a shot across the box that clanged off the post and out of play and the game remained tied at the half.
Buffalo continued to attack out of the break as Jasmine Guerber drilled a shot on goal that was saved by Schubert and then Severini followed with a rebound that was cleared by the Bonnies' defense. Later in the 67th minute, St.-Jean played a great ball into the box and Severini again got her head on it but Juliana Castellano, on in relief of Schubert, made a leaping save.
However, Severini and the Bulls would not be denied as they finally broke through in the 80th minute when Maya Galko played a perfect ball into the box right to the head of a leaping Severini who flicked the ball past the keeper and SBU back line into the back of the net for the game-winner.
The Bulls outshot the Bonnies 23-2 on the night, including 10-1 edge in shots on goal, and a 9-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities. The UB backline was fantastic, with sophomore keeper Lexie Thompson needing to make just one save on the night. Severini was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches.
"Games like that are tough," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We weren't necessarily prepared for that type of game in the sense that we've focused a lot on the defensive side of the ball, and I think we did a lot of that right and created a lot of chances. There's a lot of things to be positive about and that side of the ball is only going to get better. They stuck with it, they didn't get frustrated and sure enough the quality service we were getting all game long finally paid off for Kelly in the box."
Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, August 22 as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the nationally-ranked Pitt Panthers at 5pm.
