HAMILTON, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-1) picked up their second straight road win as they defeated Colgate 1-0 at Beyer Small '76 Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Bulls had first scoring chance of the day in the 11th minute as UB took a corner kick and after the ball got knocked around Sarah Woods got her foot on it and fired but it missed wide right.
Buffalo had another chance in the 17th minute off a free kick, but Alli Popham made her first save of the day to thwart the attack.
The Bulls had one more good look late in the half as Leah Wengender made a great run and ripped a shot on goal that was saved by Popham and resulted in a corner, but UB was unable to capitalize, and the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Bulls continued to hold possession and attack in the second half, and it paid off in the 56th minute as Katie Krohn played a beautiful ball up the field to Olivia Bizzoni who tracked it down just short of the goal line and found a wide open Wengender in the box and the Hermann Trophy watchlist selection converted for her second goal in as many games to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The UB backline was solid once again as the Raiders did not record a shot until less than 20 minutes to play when their first attempt sailed high and wide and the second was swallowed up by Lexie Thompson for her lone save of the day.
The Bulls out shot the Raiders 10-2 on the afternoon, including 5-1 edge in shots on goal, and a 9-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Thompson was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches after recording her first career shutout.
"Always good to win and get a shutout on the road, but we know we have to be more clinical in the final third," said head coach Shawn Burke. "A lot of positives on tape for us to build on."
Up next, Buffalo returns to Western New York to take on crosstown rival Canisius on Thursday, August 31 at 6pm.
