BUFFALO, NY β Scoring opportunities were plentiful for the University at Buffalo women's soccer team, but in the end the Bulls couldn't break through as they played to a scoreless draw with the Canisius Golden Griffins at the Demske Sports Complex on Thursday night.
The Bulls were the aggressors early and often and they had their first good look of the game in the sixth minute as Ellie Simmons gained possession and ripped a ball from just outside the box that clanged off the top corner of the post.
Buffalo continued to press a few minutes later as Leah Wengender got into the mix firing a shot into the top right corner that was knocked away by Canisius goalkeeper Jordan Spencer. Later, Marissa Foster broke free at the top of the box in the 31st minute and drilled a shot off her left foot that sailed just wide of the net.
UB had one of their best scoring chances of the half in the final seconds as Mika Marolly shook her defender and found Ashley Reyes who took a touch inside and ripped a shot off the crossbar but, despite outshooting the Golden Griffins 5-1 in the opening 45 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless at the break. Β
It was a defensive battle to start the second half before the hosts had a scoring opportunity in the 51st minute as Maddie Weltin found space and slid a shot past a diving Rebecca Winslow but it rolled wide of the post.
Marolly looked to answer a few minutes later as she split a pair of defenders and made a run at the end line, but the Golden Griffins backline swarmed her in the box and thwarted the attack.
Back came the Golden Griffins in the 66th minute as Weltin took a free kick and curled a ball on net but Winslow covered it up.
The Bulls continued to move the ball in the 70th minute as Simmons took a free kick and played a great ball into the box and Katie Krohn got a head on it but Spencer was there for the save. Later, a free kick by Simmons gets deflected a mere foot wide and then, on UB's ensuing corner kick, Spencer punches the attempt away.
In the 80th minute, Arianna Zumpano laid off a great ball to Wengender and she takes a rip, but it sailed high and then two minutes later, Krohn weaved through the defense and found a wide open Marolly who faked her shot but the hesitation proved costly as her shot attempt went right to Spencer for the easy save.
The Bulls had one last chance in the final minutes as Marolly broke free and dropped a ball off to Sarah Woods who played a great ball across the box but neither UB player could connect, and the game ended in a draw.
The UB backline was solid once again as they held Canisius to just one shot on goal. The Bulls outshot the Golden Griffins 14-5 on the night, including 5-1 edge in shots on goal, and an 8-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Simmons was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her efforts in the shutout.
The Bulls return to action on Sunday, September 3 at Niagara.
