NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY β The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (3-1-1) put forth a solid performance as they defeated Big 4 rival Niagara 2-0 at Niagara Field on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Katie Krohn had herself a day as she made an impact from the opening kickoff and it didn't take long to capitalize on her efforts as, in the sixth minute, UB earned a free kick and Krohn stepped up quickly and scored with a shot into the bottom right corner of the next to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
Krohn continued to make her presence known two minutes later as she made a run up the left side that drew out Niagara goalkeeper Felicia Grufman and Krohn let one fly from outside the box that lobbed over Grufman's head and in to put UB up 2-0.
Niagara had their first look of the game in the 17th minute as Amanda Cripps weaved through the UB derfense and fired with her left foot, but it sailed high over the crossbar and later, Cripps got behind the Buffalo midfielders again and fired a strike on net but Lexie Thompson made the diviing stop to her right.
The Bulls had a great scoring chance in the final minute of the half as Arianna Zumpano played a ball across to Eva Poissant who drills a shot from about 20 yards out, but Grufman batted it away and UB maintained a two-goal lead at the break.
Buffalo continued to attack coming out of the locker room as Krohn dribbled through the Niagara defense and drilled a shot that went bar down and appeared to cross the line for a goal, but the referee waved it off as the sophomore missed out on a hattrick by a mere inches.
UB had a great scoring chance once again in the 59th minute as Krohn found Ashley Reyes who broke free and banged a shot off the crossbar for the second time in as many games. Then, 20 minutes later, Krohn played a ball across the box right in front of net where Moa Andersson got a foot on it but Kelsey Riordan knocked the ball out and Kaya Schultz was unable to convert on the rebound as Riordan made the save again.
The Bulls out shot the Purple Eagles 27-13 on the afternoon, including 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Thompson made a career-high five saves on the afternoon while three Niagara goalkeepers combined for eight total stops. Krohn was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her fantastic efforts in the win.
"While it's great to wrap up a four-game road trip without a loss, our standard needs to be better," said head coach Shawn Burke. "It will be nice to get back home and have a week to get back to the details."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday, September 10 as they host Cornell in a 1pm tilt at UB Stadium.
