BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (3-1-2) overcame a first half deficit as they battled back to come away with a 1-1 draw against Cornell on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
Buffalo was aggressive early and had a great scoring chance in the third minute as Katie Krohn found Olivia Bizzoni who played a great ball to Mika Marolly and she fired a shot in stride but Erica Fox made the save.
Later, Sarah Woods made a great run up the right side and fired a shot low across the box, but Fox made the save. UB continued to attack as Woods played a great ball through to Bizzoni in front of the net, but she didn't get all of it and Fox made a diving save to escape the damage.
The Big Red broke through in the 41st minute as the Bulls committed a foul, Sophie Weeter drilled the ensuing free kick and Lexie Thompson makes a fantastic diving save but Maddie Leroy was there for the rebound goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the break.
Cornell continued to press as Leroy had another good look in the 46th minute but Thompson was there for the save.
UB then got things going in their final third as Bizzoni made a great run up the left side and played a ball to Krohn who drilled a shot from just inside of the box that slammed into the left side of the net, nearly missing.
Krohn would break through in the 58th minute as she fought through contact, got back up and fired a ball into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year to tie the game at one.
Thompson continued to come up big for UB as she made a nice save off a corner kick in the 64th minute and then again, 10 minutes later, as Ava Laden created space and found herself with a look from point blank range, but Thompson raced out to meet her and made a great sliding save to preserve the draw.
The Bulls maintained a 10-7 advantage in total shots and a 2-1 edge in corner kick opportunities, but the Big Red had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Thompson tied her career high with five saves while Fox made four stops for Cornell.
"We didn't take care of the details and didn't reward some good plays, so we had to battle back just to get out with a draw," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We are far off the standard right now and it is simple things that we have to identify and address. We've got some people shying away from the moment right now and it's showing."
Buffalo returns to action on Saturday, September 16 as they close out non-conference play at UConn at 7pm.
