BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-1) is back in action this week with a pair of road games against Big 4 teams. The Bulls will take on crosstown rival Canisius on Thursday at 6pm and then will travel to Niagara for a clash with the Purple Eagles on Sunday at Noon. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
On Thursday it will be the 41st all-time meeting between Buffalo and Canisius with the Bulls holding a 26-11-3 series edge. The Bulls defeated the Golden Griffins 1-0 at UB Stadium last season.
On Sunday, it will be the 40th meeting between Buffalo and Niagara with the Bulls holding an 25-12-2 advantage. The Bulls defeated the Purple Eagles 4-1 at UB Stadium a year ago.
The Bulls won their second straight road game last week, defeating Colgate 1-0 on Thursday. Fifth year midfielder Leah Wengender scored the game winner in the 56th minute off the assist from Olivia Bizzoni and Katie Krohn and freshman goalkeeper Lexie Thompson earned the first shutout of her career.
Wengender, a Hermann Trophy watch list selection, leads the Bulls with two goals in three games while Krohn and Arianna Zumpano have recorded a goal each. Bizzoni leads UB with two assists.
Canisius enters Thursday's game with a 1-1-2 overall record after playing to a scoreless draw against Detroit Mercy before defeating Youngstown State 1-0 on Sunday. Freshman midfielder Jessica Whitaker recorded the lone goal for the Golden Griffins over the first four games. Canisius was picked to finish fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll after a 5-5-10 overall record and a 3-2-5 league mark a season ago. The Golden Griffins allowed the fewest number of goals in the conference last season (14).
Niagara enters Sunday's action with a 1-4 overall record after falling at St. Bonaventure 2-1 on Thursday. Graduate student midfielder Emily Hähnel and sophomore midfielder Katie Diem lead the Purple Eagles with two goals each while Isabella Mazzaferro has also recorded a goal. Niagara, who was picked to finish third in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, returns 40% of its scoring from a team that posted a 6-3-1 conference record in 2022, earning the No. 3 seed in the MAAC Women's Soccer Championship and advancing to the MAAC title game for the first time since 2009 where it fell to No. 1 Quinnipiac 4-0.
Following weekend play, the Bulls will return home to host Cornell at UB Stadium on Sunday, September 10 at 1pm.
