Bulls Add Glenville State Transfer Zakiyah Winfield

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo head women's basketball coach Becky Burke has announced the addition of Zakiyah Winfield who comes to Buffalo from Glenville State.
Winfield joins GSU teammate Re'Shawna Stone in Buffalo after the duo led the Pioneers to a 35-1 overall record and a national championship. She earned Second Team All-Region honors after leading the team in scoring at 18.1 points per game and a 7.1 rebound average while shooting 57.1% from the floor. She currently sits at 1,760 career points.
The Reading, PA native was a WBCA First Team All-American and earned First Team All-Mountain East Conference and MEC All-Tournament honors after leading the team in scoring, averaging 20.6 points to go with 7.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game in a Covid-shortened 2020-21 season, scoring in double figures in all 16 games, including a career-high 36 points in a win at Charleston. She finished fourth in the nation in scoring while also ranking in the top 10 in rebounding, assists and steals and joined the 1,000-career point club in a win over Fairmont State. Winfield earned All-MEC Second team honors as a sophomore, averaging 17.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. She scored in double figures in 28 of 31 games, including 11 times with 20 or more points. Winfield made an immediate impact as a freshman, starting in 22 of 33 games as a rookie, averaging just under 10 points per game, scoring in double figures 18 times.
Prior to Glenville State, Winfield starred at Wilson High School, where she led the Bulldogs in scoring during her final three seasons. She averaged 16.8 points per game as a senior during the 2017-18 season, which ranked fourth in the county.
Burke on Winfield: "Zakiyah was the leading scorer on the best team in the country at the Division II level this year. She plays in transition as well as anyone that I've seen and gets in the paint at will, but what separates her in my mind is her ability to defend at an elite level. Any time you can add an All-American to your roster, it's great thing. We are extremely fortunate to have Zakiyah here at UB!"
Winfield joins Latrice Perkins, Chellia Watson and Stone as the fourth commit to join UB in the Burke era.
