BUFFALO, NY – Former University at Buffalo women's basketball great Stephanie Reid has been named to the Australian Women's Basketball World Cup roster, as announced by Basketball Australia today.
Reid, UB women's basketball's all-time leader in assists and a major contributor on the 2016 MAC championship and 2018 Sweet 16 teams, earned the recognition for the first time in her professional career.
"I am absolutely honored to be selected to the national squad," said Reid. "It's been a goal of mine since I was six years old, and it is an absolute privilege to be selected amongst such a talented group of athletes."
Reid is coming off a solid season with the WNBL's Townsville Fire in which she was named the club's Most Valuable Player after ranking third on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) while also averaging 5.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She shot 44.3% from the field and 94.4% from the charity stripe in an average of 30.1 minutes per game. The Fire finished the season ranked fifth in the WNBL standings but ended the tournament on a high note, winning the season finale in come back fashion. Reid scored 18 points and added nine assists in the squad's penultimate game on Friday before scoring eight of her 23 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Fire to a 76-69 triumph in the season finale on Sunday.
The 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup will be held at Sydney Olympic Park from Thursday, September 22 to Saturday, October 1.
FIBA's flagship women's event returns to Australia for the first time since 1994 and will see 12 powerhouse basketball nations compete in 38 games across 10 days of action, all vying for the coveted World title.
The Opals, who are automatic qualifiers alongside rivals Team USA, have medaled in five of the last six World Cups, including a gold medal in 2006.
