BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (10-1-2, 4-0-2 MAC) dominated from start to finish in a 3-0 win over Eastern Michigan on Senior Day at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was the ninth shutout victory of the year for the Bulls, which is tied for fifth most in a single-season in program history.
The Bulls were aggressive from the opening kickoff recording multiple shots on goal, the first coming in the sixth minute as Leah Wengender found herself wide open in the box but her shot missed right pf the goal and a then a few minutes later the senior got a head on a ball that banged off the crossbar.
Later, Payton Robertson fed Hannah Callaghan who one-touched a shot that sailed high and seconds later, Arianna Zumpano had a look from point blank range, but it rolled wide of the net and out of play.
Buffalo had more scoring opportunities in the 25th minute as Taylor Caridi put a shot on net that sailed just wide, and Marissa Foster was there for the rebound, but Rebecca Przybylo made a good save. Caridi would have another look in the 38th minute as she drilled a shot on net, but it was right at Przybylo who made the save and the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Bulls continued to control possession and attack to start the second half and it paid off in the 56th minute as Zumpano drew a foul in the box and freshman Ellie Simmons converted the ensuing penalty kick for her first career goal to give UB a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo added to their lead in the 65th minute as Robertson found Sarah Woods who played a great ball into the box to Zumpano and she drilled a shot into the back left corner of the net to put UB up 2-0.
The Bulls weren't done as they added another goal less than a minute later as Robertson found freshman Katie Krohn up field who drew Przybylo out and then beat her, firing a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead and that would be more than enough to preserve the shutout victory.
The Bulls dominated all facets of the game as they held a 24-4 edge in total shots, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal, and a 3-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly made a pair of saves for UB while Przybylo made seven stops for Eastern Michigan. Simmons was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her fantastic efforts on both sides of the ball in the win.
"We know we have to get better," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Goals are hard to come by right now for us and it's not for a lack of opportunity so that's something that we will address. We called them out a little bit at halftime and they obviously responded. And then I can't say enough about our seniors. You always want to take the time to honor them and what they've done for this program, especially this class. I this time and time again, the strong culture that we have here is because of them so it's nice to send them out on a win."
Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, October 13 as they welcome Northern Illinois to UB Stadium for a showdown under the lights at 7pm.
