OXFORD, OHIO – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (9-1-2, 3-0-2 MAC) played to a scoreless draw at Miami (OH) on Thursday afternoon.
It is the eighth shutout of the year for the UB backline, who has only given up five goals on the year, including just one in league play.
The RedHawks had the first scoring opportunity of the game on a breakaway in the 12th minute, but fifth year goal keeper Emily Kelly made the first of several great saves on the afternoon to knock the ball out of play.
The Bulls got their first good looks of the game in the 19th and 20th minutes as Leah Wengender found Katie Krohn who ripped a shot, but it was blocked by the Miami defense and later, Wengender broke free up the sideline and fired a shot on net, but Izzie Vaccari made the save.
Miami would take one more shot on goal later in the half, saved again by Kelly, and the game would remain scoreless at the half.
The Bulls came out more aggressive out of the locker room as Arianna Zumpano and Wengender got off a pair of shots in the opening minutes of the second half. The next good scoring opportunity came in the 77th minute as Wengender and Zumpano fired shots on goal, but Vaccari was there to make a pair of stops.
Kelly would make one more fantastic save, followed by a pair of shots by Sarah Woods and Payton Robertson late in the game but neither found the back of the net as the game ended in a draw.
The Bulls and RedHawks were even at 11 shots each with UB holding a slim 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Kelly, who was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches, finished the day with five saves while Vaccari made six saves for Miami (OH).
"You have to give a lot of credit to Miami," said head coach Shawn Burke. "They made things difficult and put us under a lot of pressure. WE know we can do better in certain areas of the field and will need to do so moving forward, but we will take the shutout and point on the road.
The Bulls return to action on Sunday as they host Eastern Michigan on Senior Day at 1pm.
