BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (11-1-3, 5-0-3 MAC) played to a scoreless draw with the Bowling Green Falcons at Cochrane Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The 12-game unbeaten streak is the second-longest in program history, trailing only the 2014 (14) squad. It was also the 11th shutout victory of the year for the Bulls, which is third-most in a single season in program history.
The Bulls were aggressive early as Olivia Bizzoni and Sarah Woods recorded a pair of shots in the opening minutes that missed off target. Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly was tested later in the half as she made a pair of saves a few minutes apart to keep the Falcons off the board. Senior Leah Wengender had a pair of good looks in the 18th and 21st minutes but Lili Berg was there to make the stops and she would make one more save late in the half on a shot by Cashlin Copley as the game remained scoreless at the break.
Offense was at a premium in the second half as the teams combined for just six shots over the final 45 minutes of play. The Bulls had their lone scoring chances in the 50th and 63rd minutes as Wengender and Jasmine Guerber put shots on net but Berg made a good save and Guerber's attempt missed wide. Kelly made a pair of good saves over the final 20 minutes to preserve the shutout.
The teams were evenly matched overall as the Falcons held a narrow 8-7 advantage in total shots while they were even at four shots on goal each and the Bulls held a 3-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Kelly made four saves on the afternoon while Berg made four stops for Bowling Green. Copley was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her impact in the second half.
"We have to be better when teams play direct," said head coach Shawn Burke. "When we don't deal with pressure we struggle. Still have to give a ton of credit to BG and we will be delighted to take a point on the road."
Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, October 20 at UB Stadium as they host Central Michigan at 7pm.
